September 27 & 28th, 2024

In the Scenic Southern Finger Lakes Region of Upstate New York!

The popular annual “Tree to Table” event is being expanded this year into a full two days of lumber milling and processing topics covered by experts from Cornell Cooperative Extension, Penn State University Extension, local milling experts from the NY Forest Owners Association, and Wood-Mizer. Whether still thinking about your first mill, or a seasoned pro, this unique portable sawmilling training will cover it all.

Friday, September 27th

9:30 - Noon (Angus Glen Farms; 3050 Station Road; Watkins Glen, NY)

  • Purposes, benefits, and requirements of on-site lumber milling
  • Selection of standing timber and D.I.Y. harvesting options
  • Log evaluation & preparation for milling: bucking, scaling, grading, and handling
  • Sawing for grade and yield with smaller mills

Lunch (on your own – a list of nearby local eating options will be provided)

2:00 to 4:30 (Cornell’s Arnot Forest; 611 County Rd. 13; Van Etten, NY)

  • A comparison of smaller and larger mills: scaling the investment to your objectives
  • Softwood vs. hardwood milling methods: 2 x 4’s or table tops?
  • Sawing for production with larger mills
  • Sawing for grade with larger mills

Saturday, September 28th

9:00 to Noon (Cornell’s Arnot Forest; 611 County Rd. 13; Van Etten, NY)

  • Scaling, grading, and selection of lumber for specific applications
  • Post-milling lumber care
  • Advanced milling methods for specialty products, part 1: quarter-sawn and beams.

Lunch (on your own – a list of local eating options will be provided)

2:00 to 4:30 (Stanton Hill Studios; 2320 Stanton Hill Rd; Nichols, NY)

  • Milling methods for specialty products, part 2: book-match, slabs and figured wood.
  • Lumber drying: options and rules of thumb
  • From forest to final form: a tour of Stanton Hill Studios (www.stantonhillstudios.com)

Organized by the Southern Finger Lakes Chapter of the NY Forest Owners Association (www.nyfoa.org) and Cornell University Cooperative Extension. All are welcome to attend. Cost is $40.
