This year we need your help to expand the CCE Schuyler Teaching Garden!
The CCE Teaching Garden is a living classroom, it educates the community about
gardening techniques, plant varieties, pollinators, and other topics. Located
at 323 Owego Street in Montour Falls, the garden contains more than 60 fruiting
varieties, a pollinator hotel, composting demonstrations, and more. We conduct
vegetable variety trials to help Cornell University find better crops and have
numerous permaculture methods on display. Master Gardeners care for the Teaching
Garden and anyone in the community can use it.
After 12 years, our Teaching Garden could use a facelift. Some raised beds need rebuilding and the path should be extended so it winds through the entire garden. We want to create better spaces for presentations, workshops, and public enjoyment.
There is much to discover in our Teaching Garden, but the space is not being utilized
as best as it could be. The Teaching Garden is filled with edible plants,
native flowers, and unique species but without labels or explanations people
cannot fully realize what’s around them. As a “teaching” garden we want signage
for visitors of all ages to enjoy.
Updating the infrastructure will make the garden a more welcoming gathering spot. Creating a continuous path with crushed stone will give people better access to the garden. It will also alleviate some of the weeding burden in areas that get overgrown easily. Fixing the warping raised beds and benches will encourage usage of the garden and allow CCE and other organizations to hold workshops in the space. We want the Teaching Garden to transform into a destination for quiet contemplation and educational programs in the community.
